A. luchuensis (formerly A. acidus and A. foetidus) is markedly different from those of other black Aspergillus species for which a public genome sequence is or will soon be available. This indicates that A. acidus and the other black aspergilli utilize different strategies to degrade plant biomass and detailed analysis of these differences will enable us to design better industrial processes for plant biomass degradation. In addition, there are also significant differences in their ability to utilize monomeric carbon sources. For instance, A. brasiliensis is the only species of the black aspergilli that can grow from spores on D-galactose. We anticipate that the availability of a range of additional black aspergilli genomes would allow identification of novel enzymes and/or regulatory mechanisms.
