bacterium Ellin514 is an aerobically-grown bacterial isolate from pasture soil. The soil was originally collected from the Dairy Research Institute, Ellinbank, Victoria, Australia.

Isolates of the phylum Verrucomicrobia have in common that they are specialized for the utilization of sugars. Their high abundance and activity in a large variety of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems, as well as in the intestine of vertebrates, indicates that this until recently unknown group of microorganisms plays a major role in the global carbon cycle. 16S rRNA genes detected in soils worldwide indicate that this species and it's close relatives are abundant members of this soil microbial community. This is the one of the first recognized pure-culture isolate from subdivision (class) 3 of the phylum Verrucomicrobia.
