Acidothrix acidophila CBS 136259 was sequenced as part of the 1000 Fungal Genomes Project

Acidothrix acidophila is an acidophilic soil fungus. It belongs to Amplistromataceae (Sordariomycetes, Ascomycota), the family which encompasses exclusively wood-inhabiting fungi of two genera, Amplistroma and Wallrothiella. Highly distinct ecological preferences of A. acidophila make this fungus unique among members of the family. In general, only a few filamentous fungal species with acidophilic characteristics are known. A. acidophila represents an example of high ecological and physiological plasticity that allow fungi to occupy harsh environments, and, together with ecological fitting, they are responsible for the evolution of generalist species towards specialists in extremes. The fungus is potentially important for use in biotechnological processes because of its wide environmental tolerance and production of secondary metabolites and enzymes.
