Both Thermotoga naphthophila RKU-10 and Thermotoga petrophila RKU-1 have the T. maritima cellobiose transporter operon, but T. petrophila does not grow on cellulose and T. naphthophila grows poorly on cellulose. Both are close relatives of T. maritima and T. neapolitana and their genome sequences would provide vitally important data to detect recombination sites in the vicinities of archaea-derived genes. Both species were isolated from the same site, so these would provide the first information about the distribution of genes via HGT among organisms in a hydrothermal ecosystem.
