Microthyrium microscopicum is the type species of the genus Microthyrium. The genus is widely distributed with a wide host range. Microthyrium microscopicum is known from leaves and stems of hosts such as Castanea sativa, Buxus sempervirens and Quercus ilex.

Species of Microthyrium (Microthyriaceae, Microthyriales, Dothideomycetes) have superficial thyriothecia, with a poorly developed basal layer, a prominent central ostiole, bitunicate asci and 1-septate ascospores, usually with fine appendages.

Microthyrium spp. are foliar epiphytes, biotrophs, saprobes or epiphytes on dead or living leaves and stems of plants. This group of fungi is relatively poorly studied, and thus molecular data is needed to confirm the relationships of these families and their genera.

This genome was sequenced as part of the 1000 Fungal Genomes Project.
