Antrodia serialis by Otto Miettinen

In the “1KFG: Deep Sequencing of Ecologically-relevant Dikarya“ project (CSP1974), we aim to sequence additional sampling of genomic diversity within keystone lineages of plant-interacting fungi and saprophytic fungi that are of special ecological importance for understanding terrestrial ecosystems. In addition, comparative genome analysis with saprotrophic, mycorrhizal and pathogenic fungi will provide new insights into the specific and conserved adaptations associated with each fungal lifestyle.

Antrodia serialis

Antrodia serialis is a basidiomycete in the family Fomitopsidaceae, order Polyporales. With a wide distribution in the coniferous forest of Eurasia, A. serialis is a prominent brown-rot decayer of spruce logs (Picea spp.) hence playing an important role in the forest structure and carbon sequestration.

Together with 12 other species of Antrodia sensu lato, A. serialis constitutes the Antrodia serialis group. These species differ in their morphology such as color of basidiocarp and basidiospore size, ecology, and geographic distribution. A. serialis produces annual to biennial, cream colored with an ochraceous upper surface fruit bodies. Often individual resupinate to effused-reflexed basidiocarps fuse to form elongated structures, more than 1 m along the fallen conifer log, tough and easily peeled off in one piece. A characteristic feature of the species is that it is frequently eaten by microlepidoptera, yielding powdery pore surface. A. serialis may also be found decaying timber in buildings. The hyphal system is dimitic, bearing clamp connections. Basidiospores are fusoid-cylindrical to ellipsoid, 5.8-8.2 x 2-3.5 µm.

Why sequence the genome?

The isolate Sig1Antser10 was sampled in Buskerud (Sigdal), Norway and sequenced in the framework of the 1K Fungal Genomes Project, which aims in increasing knowledge in phylogenetic relationships and functional diversity among fungi. The availability of a reference genome will first help to support our ongoing research based on a meta-population genectics study in Fennoscandia using RADseq. Besides, sequencing a genome of Antrodia serialis, improves the phylogenomic overview of the Polyporales.

The 1KFG project is a large collaborative effort aiming for master publication(s). Please do contact the PI associated with unpublished 1KFG genomes for permission prior to the use of any data in publications.
