Within the class of the Chlorophyceae, the strain SAG 2326 belongs to the green algal family of the Scenedesmaceae. It was formerly called Scenedesmus dactylycoccoides T. Holtmann. With the nomenclature of genera and species within the Scenedesmaceae changing over time, the strain is known as Scenedesmus (Acutodesmus, Tetradesmus) obliquus SAG 2326. Cells of the strain display great morphological variation as shown in the images. Preliminary phylogenetic analysis based on the presented genome places this strain outside of the species S. obliquus.
